P1040641Fire Pit Weather

The last couple years when cool weather appeared, Dave and I have discussed putting a fire pit in our courtyard. However, each time we questioned whether we would use a fire pit enough to make it worth our purchase especially since we neither one cared for the cold. This year after attending  a big bonfire at a friend’s home,  the idea of the fire pit surfaced again. It sounded like a neat idea but would we really want to sit outside in the cooler weather to enjoy it. However, the fire pit continued to be mentioned almost daily.

We decided to create  a fire pit when Dave came up with a fantastic idea. Why not take one of the large cast iron pots that we were currently using as a flower pot  and try it to see if we would use it before purchasing a fire pit? Well, we finally decided to try it to see if we thought we would actually build a fire and sit out in the cold. So we emptied the cast iron pot, got some firewood from my brother, and built a fire in the pot. It was so neat that first night sitting out on our patio — no TV or  radio,  just sitting, relaxing, and talking. It was so peaceful.

Well, needless to say, we were hooked. But, we decided we liked the old cast iron pot for the fire pit rather than a new fire pit. It was the perfect setup. Our creative ideas continued to flow. Since the pot was to be setting on our patio, we purchased an aluminum water heater pan and filled it with landscape rocks, placing the pot on top of the rocks. Then we circled the pot with geodes. We actually liked this homemade creation much better than any of the fire pits that  we had seen and it was a perfect fit with our courtyard theme. If you are considering adding a fire pit to your patio, I don’t think you will be sorry.
