What can I say about Sadie? Sadie was my daughter’s pug that would have been 14 years old today. She was a very special part of our family. I remember when Shauna named her she said, “I am going to name her Mercedes and call her Sadie. That is one way of having a Mercedes.” I will never forget when Shauna first got Sadie and took her to see my mother who was ill with cancer. My mother wanted to see Sadie, so Shauna placed her on the bed beside her. Sadie just curled up beside her and laid still. It was amazing to see her be so gentle and loving when she was just a puppy.
She definitely had her own stubborn ways but was a very loving dog. It seemed that she could sense when you were not feeling well and acted appropriately. If you needed a nap, Sadie was right there with you. If you were sick and could not give her your undivided attention, she adapted to that. Many times when we would be puppy-sitting, Sadie would curl up by my feet on the sofa and let me nap. It was as if she could sense how you were feeling. She loved to curl up in your lap no matter what you were doing whether using the computer or reading the newspaper. You better make room for Sadie. As she got older she became even more set in her ways.
In her final days, her stomach began to swell and there were repeated trips to the vet for relief. Upon the recommendation of the vet, Shauna had to have her put to sleep. Believe me it was not easy for any of us but it was necessary. It was unfair to continue to put Sadie through the misery. Even during her final days, she was a loving puppy and it literally broke our hearts to have to make that tough decision. Sadie continues to be with us today as we continue to share the “Sadie” stories from the past.
