Do You Teach or Do You Educate?

As a teacher, I never really thought about the difference between teaching and educating. As a retired teacher, I hope that I was a teacher that inspired rather than a teacher that just imparted knowledge by teaching a fact or a principle. I hope that I was one who imparted intellectual, as well as social and moral guidance — a teacher that set an example for others to follow; a teacher that could perceive when guidance was needed but was also careful to allow students to grow wiser on their own.
